There’s good news for those who have marvelled at the sights and sounds of Spain while seeing the Bollywood movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara! In an effort to create awareness about tourism prospects in Spain, the Spanish Office of Tourism has turned its attention majorly on India driving up the influx of tourists to the European country.
They recently conducted a road show at The Taj Bengal in Kolkata. Road shows have proven to be effective platforms for travel and trade partners from India to meet potential clients and suppliers from different countries. And this time too, it was no different. At the recently conducted road show, travel and tourism partners and suppliers from India and Spain interacted and identified mutually beneficial areas of collaboration.
Said Lisha Krishnan, Trade Manager at the Tourism Office of Spain in Mumbai, “We want to highlight every aspect of tourism in Spain through road shows in India. Spain is the second country in the world with the largest number of historical sites and monuments and most of these are prominent tourist locations.”
She further added, “India is a strategic market for Spain and is one of the leading in Asia. We have been active in the market for more than a decade and have opened a Tourism Office in Mumbai in 2010. Through sustained and constant promotion, we have seen a growth from this market and we expect the flow of tourists to increase consistently over the next few years.”
She believes that the typical Indian visitor to Spain is assumed to be in the age bracket of 35-50 years, is a relatively seasoned traveller to Europe, wants to expand his/her horizon and undergo a melange of heritage and modern experiences while on a tour of Spain.
Ms Krishnan also said that Spain coming under the lens of Bollywood movies with a flurry of directors shooting there has piqued interest levels of the Indian traveller about the country as a friendly and experiential destination.
She also enlightened those who had gathered at the road show about the high speed train network in Spain called the AVE which connects the major cities in Spain and helps people reach from one destination to another in just 2-3 hours. This allows tourists to travel in great comfort and economy.
What’s more, Spain is home to BarcelonaFC and Real Madrid – the country’s two major football teams. Spain is thus a must visit place for every sports lover!
The way ahead now is increasing the number of packaged holiday options which include Spain as a destination besides customizing travel itineraries for different kind of travellers be it for business-oriented tours, a trip for the solo traveller or a cruise circuit, covering places like Madrid, Barcelona and Andalucía.
Good news not just for Spanish tourism but the wider economy as a whole! Spain, it seems, looks all set to become the playground of Europe!
